European Bitcoin Exchange Hacked for $1.4 Million, Claims ...

The thing that scares me about bitcoin.

I have been in bitcoin for a while now, enough that it has made my life comfortable. But the recent price rises, whilst welcome, have made me think..if bitcoin does become what we hoped in 2009/10 then the world's economy will be in pretty bad shape. Bitcoin becoming a major hedge against dollars, euros, pounds likely means their value has take a hit. So bitcoin is worth more because fiat is worth less, a lot less. These days bitcoin has become my insurance plan instead of a revolutionary tech idea that was new and exciting. It's a double edged sword, but also of the fiat systems collapse that is not the fault of bitcoin, that's the fault of the fiat systems. So I don't feel like we are harming the world economies we are just keeping them at arm's length.. I don't see society collapsing which would make bitcoin worthless,I just feel that the house of cards has become unsustainable and this pandemic is highlighting these weaknesses.

Cointelegraph - I am annoyed - Stop that nonsense!

I have been following this site Cointelegraph for some time, just to keep up a bit with what happens in the world in regards to BTC. It has been quite okay, both good and bad.Just a moment ago I read an article by some wiesguy named William Suberg, titled: Trump, tax and hacks: 5 things shaping Bitcoin price action this week.- Why would he even mix in this Trump fellow in to the headline? It got me confused, did that man really buy bitcoin I thought(...and hoped). It turns out "no", then did that person change, fix, remove any legislation or so in regards to crypto? and again, "no". So why did this schmuck William mention this Trump fellow?? (Now mind you, I am not American) .. So how was a simple tax return affecting the BTC price?? I hope someone could explain this, because it got me confused and a bit annoyed?- Here is the shit article for reference:https://cointelegraph.com/news/trump-tax-and-hacks-5-things-shaping-bitcoin-price-action-this-week
Could anyone mention a good BTC news site- Without this political propaganda nonsense. (Like real Journalism- you know unbiased)Also - If you can not find the reason for a market value change - Don't bring unrelated shit up. (MtGox works - Tax returns, not so much)
[Taxation is theft! - But that is a different discussion ]

The 1MB simply can't survive, and signalling for Segwit2X is a trap for other miners

In this post, I set out a simple sequence of logic which shows that firm believers in 1MB blocks are almost certainly going to lose their investment in Bitcoin.
I’ll also show that choosing to mine Segwit2X is a higher risk strategy than mining Bitcoin Cash, and that BCH is almost certain to be the dominant chain.
I will only use simple sentences, with links to evidence to support my statements.
  1. Demand for Bitcoin has exploded over the past year (Bitcoin price over past year)
  2. This has severely stretched Bitcoin’s capacity: median transaction fees have increased by more than 37 times in the past twelve months (from $0.123 to $4.661 ) and typical confirmation times are now 7 times longer than they were a year ago (from 22 minutes to 159 minutes)
  3. The market has proven that is it is willing to invest in cryptocurrencies which are not Bitcoin. At one point this year, more than 60% of money invested in cryptocurrency was not in Bitcoin
  4. If Bitcoin does not scale, one of the 1259 other cryptocurrencies will. Brand power does not last forever.
  5. Bitcoin’s current scaling roadmap (23 months old, written by CTO of Blockstream) has focused on scaling through the use of “non-bandwidth”, off-chain solutions (with Lightning Network specifically mentioned).
  6. Blockstream have stated their future revenue will come from off-chain scaling solutions, and as a company, they have no incentive to damage their business model by scaling Bitcoin in other ways.
  7. Since the LN white paper release (21 months ago), the Lightning Network has yet to be delivered, and there is still no visibility on when it will be released
  8. Even if LN is released, it has been proven that LN will not work as advertised, and that it will actually promote centralised hubs over decentralisation
  9. In countries like the US, Lightning Channel providers will have to register as “money transmitters”, making them (and the network) subject to regulation and censorship
At this point, it’s worth taking a breath, and seeing where we are...
We have a cryptocurrency with incredible brand loyalty and value, but which is also relying on technology that is starting to weaken in comparison to competitors. Cryptocurrency investors have already proven that they’re willing to invest in coins which are not Bitcoin. The company who wrote the scaling roadmap for Bitcoin naturally have an incentive to scale Bitcoin with one of their own products. They haven’t managed to deliver this product. Even if they do, it’s been proven to not work as originally advertised, and will actually increase centralisation and exposure to regulation. There currently isn’t a visible or viable scaling solution for the Segwit Bitcoin 1MB chain.
This brings us to what is happening over the next ten days.
  1. In about 10 days, Bitcoin will fork into the Segwit1X and Segwit2X chains), with Segwit2X offering a small capacity upgrade (2MB blocks)
  2. However, this is no longer a two-horse race. Player Three has entered the game.
  3. Bitcoin Cash (BCH) has a default 8MB block size, but more importantly, it has a revised POW algorithm that allows it to operate with very little hash rate (although not very elegantly)
  4. In order for Bitcoin to operate, hashrate is required.
  5. Large drops in hashrate mean that less blocks are mined per hour.
  6. Since the 1MB blocks are already full, with fewer blocks per hour, network capacity is affected even more significantly (Bitcoin’s mempool since hashrate started to be shared with BCH)
So we now have three cryptocurrencies, which are competing for the same hashrate. What do miners do?
We know that miners are selfish - they only want to make billions, and protect the millions they’ve already invested. Miners will make the choice that makes them the most money. This is not an attack, it is how Bitcoin was designed. Blockstream are behaving in the same way; they’re trying to shape Bitcoin into using the technology which will make them the most money.
With the upcoming fork, miners (providers of hashrate) have four choices. They can:
At this point, you have to put yourself in a miner’s shoes, and ask yourself what you’d do. You’ve sunk millions into this, and could potentially make billions. Which choice do you make?
For either Segwit1X or Segwit2X to survive, they require a majority of hashrate in order to ensure that the chain has enough capacity to meet demand. If it doesn’t have enough capacity, investors will (as they have in the past) invest in other cryptocurrencies instead.
As a miner, you cannot directly control whether a majority happens or not, because the other miners are your competitors. You can’t directly control them.
Signalling intent is one way of trying to work out what everyone else is doing, to try and ensure alignment and consensus before the date at which it becomes crucial.
  1. If signalling intent can be believed, Segwit1X will simply not survive
  2. If signalling intent cannot be believed, neither Segwit1X or Segwit2X will survive, because hashrate will be divided across the chains.
In both of those scenarios, the 1MB chain does not survive. There’s no other way to say it simply, and if you’re still a 1MBer at this point, I’m afraid there’s simply nothing else to convince you. I sincerely hope you haven’t over-invested.
That said, there’s still a question about whether Segwit2X will survive. It needs a majority of hashrate to transfer over, and current signalling suggests that this will happen.
However, the people signalling are your competitors.
It is in their interest for you to be mining something that they are not.
Segwit2X is only safe to mine as a majority, and the people telling you it’s safe to mine are your competitors. Do you trust them? Do they trust you?
Of the three chains, the only one that is guaranteed to survive, no matter what, is Bitcoin Cash.
Mining Bitcoin Cash is the only way to guarantee that you, as a miner, will continue to make money. For us, as Bitcoin investors, I think the choice is pretty obvious.

Op-Ed: Ethereum's social layer solution vs Bitcoin's social layer solution

I wrote this to argue that users are the most important layer of defense in a network. https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/19/bitcoin-social-laye. Here's an excerpt in which I apply that to Ethereum & The DAO.

What Ethereum got right

Since the collapse of The DAO, no one in crypto should be allowed to say “code is law” with a straight face. The DAO was a decentralized venture fund that boldly claimed pure governance through code, then imploded when someone found a loophole. Ethereum, a crypto protocol on which The DAO was built, erased this fiasco with a hard fork, walking back the ledger of transactions to the moment before disaster struck. Dissenters from this social-layer intervention kept going on Ethereum’s original, unforked protocol, calling it Ethereum Classic. To so-called “Bitcoin maximalists,” the DAO fork is emblematic of Ethereum’s trust-dependency, and therefore its weakness.
There’s irony, then, in maximalists’ current enthusiasm for narratives describing Bitcoin’s social-layer resiliency. The story goes: in the event of a security failure, Bitcoin’s community of developers, investors, miners and users are an ultimate layer of defense. We, Bitcoin’s community, have the option to fork the protocol—to port our investment of time, capital and computing power onto a new version of Bitcoin. It’s our collective commitment to a trust-minimized monetary system that makes Bitcoin strong. (Disclosure: I hold bitcoin and ether.)
Even this narrative implies trust—in the people who make up that crowd. Historically, Bitcoin Core developers, who maintain the Bitcoin network’s dominant client software, have also exerted influence, shaping Bitcoin’s road map and the story of its use cases. Ethereum’s flavor of minimal trust is different, having a public-facing leadership group whose word is widely imbibed. In either model, the social layer abides. When they forked away The DAO, Ethereum’s leaders had to convince a community to come along.
You can’t believe in the wisdom of the crowd and discount its ability to see through an illegitimate power grab, orchestrated from the outside. When people criticize Ethereum or Bitcoin, they are really criticizing this crowd, accusing it of a propensity to fall for false narratives.

See the full list of our services: Platinum.fund We are more than proud to present our education project. The UBAI can help you to learn specifics about cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies. Learn all about ICO avenues and opportunities, plug into the world of trading cryptocurrency markets, become an expert in scam projects, promoting ICOs and STOs, launching your own campaigns and many more! What are the different cryptocurrency regulations in major countries? Find the answer after reading this article.
Cryptocurrency Regulations across Major Countries
Cryptocurrency and the blockchain industry may seem sufficiently exciting and attractive to you now. After all, you are taking the time and effort to study this course. You may be planning to work in cryptocurrency and the blockchain industry. Of course, we want to encourage you and help you proceed toward your goal. But it is also important you understand the regulations guiding the blockchain industry to help keep yourself out of trouble.
This year, in particular, seems to be the year in which a lot of countries are looking to finally coalesce the regulations relating to the blockchain industry into a workable legal framework. Some countries are more accommodating to cryptocurrency and blockchain technological innovations while others are still more cautious. We will examine how each major country is forming their own regulatory framework for the blockchain industry.
Canada
Cryptocurrencies are not considered legal tender in Canada. This was clearly expressed by the country’s Financial Consumer Agency (FCA). Canada, like the US, has yet to clearly define or legislate a framework surrounding cryptocurrencies. But Canada still appears to be among the most transparent of countries for the nation’s interpretation and enforcement of the law surrounding cryptocurrencies (aside from Switzerland). For the time being, Canada has clearly stated its reluctance to adopt cryptocurrency as a legal tender, due to its high volatility. “ “The United States of America (USA)
There are certain laws regarding transactions in virtual currency in the US today but there is still no comprehensive legal framework. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission currently regulates virtual currencies as commodities. The CFTC is the first US regulator to allow for public cryptocurrency trading. The Securities and Exchange Commission requires registration of any virtual currency traded in the US if it is classified as a security (e.g. by the Howey test).
The regulatory authorities have not yet formulated or offered a coherent framework for regulations regarding cryptocurrencies. Typical of most legislators and regulatory agencies in the US, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has intensified its focus on the pressing need for comprehensive regulation. And it seems everyone is waiting for the right catalyst to coalesce into a usable set of legal guidelines that can protect the investing public and also allow for blockchain and cryptocurrency innovation as well.
If cryptocurrency becomes a form of legal tender in the US, there will likely be stringent laws on its use. However, if cryptocurrency is treated like a security, cryptocurrencies would be regulated under securities law as interpreted by the SEC. Present securities laws place a large number of limitations on who is able to buy securities, how they are traded, and how to ensure transparency in the flow of information relevant to investors. Also note that non-US investors may experience their own difficulties getting a license to trade cryptocurrencies in the country. “ “Japan
Japan has always been one of the most positive and forward-thinking nations regarding cryptocurrencies and the blockchain. Of course, they were cautious at first, and they knew no more than anyone else in government, which means they literally knew nothing. But they took time to research, learn, and develop an approach to regulate the industry without killing it. The official policy is clear: Protect the public interest, but also encourage the growth of the industry with a legal framework that allows for innovation in blockchain and cryptocurrencies.
China
The situation in China is a sad one. The country has been taking increasingly strict actions to discourage and outlaw any activity related to the blockchain industry. China has banned ICOs, frozen all accounts associated with cryptocurrency, stopped bitcoin miners and even ordered a nationwide ban on all forms of cryptocurrency trading.
China has the strictest laws against cryptocurrency. Yet, despite that fact, as of 2017, 50% of the world’s mining population was from China! If you are involved with the cryptocurrency industry it is strongly advised to stay away from China, and avoid transactions with Chinese business because of the unpredictable and negative legal framework.
“ “The United Kingdom & European Union
Brexit is scheduled to take place in March 2019, yet the UK and the EU still remain united in their regulatory attitude toward cryptocurrencies. There are also reports that the UK and EU are planning to end anonymity for cryptocurrency traders.
The UK and EU are both trying to control all the scams and frauds. They are working with cryptocurrency platforms to stop or at least report all suspicious transactions. This adds a degree of regulatory burden on the exchanges as well as increasing the associated compliance costs. Cryptocurrencies are extremely volatile. They are a high-risk investment. Governments across Europe are greatly concerned about the possibility of both retail and sophisticated investors losing a lot of money.
This has led to a situation similar to that in the US. The regulatory authorities have not yet formulated or offered a coherent framework for regulations regarding cryptocurrencies. There is an intense focus on the pressing need for comprehensive regulation. And everyone is waiting for the right catalyst to coalesce into a usable set of legal guidelines that can protect the investing public and allow for blockchain and cryptocurrency innovation as well. We certainly hope for intelligent and effective legislation from all the major countries. “ “Accommodating & Unaccommodating Countries
Below is a list of countries we have not specifically covered, but they have each taken an active position on a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. The following countries are either supportive or at least neutral toward cryptocurrencies:
-Switzerland. -Australia. -Nigeria. -Ghana. -South Africa. -Singapore.
Countries with the most stringent and negative cryptocurrency regulation:
-Venezuela. -South Korea. -India. -Russia.
Did you know?
It is not uncommon to see Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency ATMs throughout Japan.
Exchange robberies and hacks like MtGox, and the recent loss of $530 million NEM coins have led to serious debate in the Japanese government. The industry needs to provide a secure and manageable solution to these problems. Voluntary self-regulation and close cooperation with regulatory authorities is the most favored solution. It seems the regulators are working hard behind the scenes right now leading the industry in the desired direction in typical Japanese fashion. “ “Blockchain Industry Regulations in the USA
Based on the information received from the Columbia Science and Technology Law Review, there was a variety of responses from different government bodies about blockchain regulations. The regulators responses ranged from indifference to suspicion, and to positive expectation and excitement.
The US government has tremendous constitutional power to regulate business and industry, including of course the blockchain industry if it so desires. But basically, the federal government has been relatively indifferent and has even refused to speak on blockchain regulations despite the interest of various federal agencies. As of 2017, eight states in the US were working on bills promoting the use of cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies. It is even reported that a few states have actually begun the final steps before voting and passing legislation into law.
On April 3, 2018 Arizona introduced a law allowing corporations to hold and share data on the blockchain. The governor, Doug Ducey, put forward the legislation after the state began accepting signatures and smart contracts recorded on the blockchain as legally valid documentation. In 2017, Delaware was the first state to pass legislation allowing for shares of stocks to be legally traded on the blockchain.
Other notable developments have occurred in the US at the state or local level. Vermont makes use of blockchain as evidence in trials. Chicago uses blockchain to maintain real estate records. New York is currently evaluating four bills for the application of data storage on the blockchain. “ ” Blockchain Regulations in Europe
The entire European Union has approached blockchain with a positive and welcoming attitude. The EU has taken the position that they want to actively encourage innovation. This philosophy could support the development of cryptocurrencies in two ways:
-Encouraging the exploration of uses testing the impact and effect of the laws in a way that allows for a more finely-tuned and sophisticated understanding for all parties involved.
-Giving entrepreneurs the confidence that their target markets will be more trusting of their solution since they are operating with the explicit legal support of the state.
This approach, along with the EU’s scope as the regulator of 28 different countries, will encourage growth across the entire crypto ecosystem, and may end up transforming Europe into one of the most desirable destinations for blockchain development. Entrepreneurs are likely to move to the EU bloc to access the rich vein of available talent, as well as the positive and supportive laws.
The EU has actually disclosed through its executive arm that it is working on the use of blockchain for distributed ledger based projects. EU officials have constantly stated they are looking for ways to support more innovation with distributed ledger technology. The European Commission said it was “”actively monitoring Blockchain and DLT developments”” and has work in progress to explore “”DLT benefits and challenges as well as fields for application in financial services””.
The official press release stated that the commission clearly wants to “”pilot projects to foster decentralized innovation ecosystems and help reshape interactions between consumers, producers, creators and among citizens, businesses and administrations to the end benefit of society””. “ “Blockchain Regulations in Europe §2
Switzerland has gradually become the favored hub for cryptocurrency and blockchain development in Europe. This position has been enhanced through a Swiss non-profit blockchain and cryptographic technology ecosystem known as the Crypto Valley Association.
The Crypto Valley Association has begun working on the development of an ICO Code of Conduct to take advantage of the ban imposed by China on token crowd sales. They are hoping to capture the Chinese and Asian entrepreneurs searching for a new home.
Other countries are not as accepting of this new DLT technology and have even gone as far as classifying it as illegal and immoral behavior. There have been hyperbolic concerns most notably from China that cryptocurrencies will destabilize world financial markets.
There are various pilot projects and efforts to prove the benefits of cryptocurrencies and the blockchain industry currently being tested all across Europe. Yet even now they are barely scratching the surface of the full potential of the blockchain.
Country-by-Country Cryptocurrency Adoption
Citizens of countries all over the world have varying attitudes about cryptocurrency. These attitudes and sentiments can be very significant to the future adoption of cryptocurrencies because politicians and regulators tend to act in consideration of the collective opinion of the public. Some countries were more accommodating at first but then became stricter, despite positive public interest, basically saying they are still not sure about the possible consequences and benefits of the technology. “ “Country-by-Country Cryptocurrency Adoption
Estonia
Surprisingly enough this small Baltic nation has gained a reputation for being quick to accept technological innovation. Estonia has a tech-friendly government eager to accommodate the innovative use of cryptocurrency in fields ranging from blockchain technology for healthcare and banking services; and even granting citizens the right to become what is known as “e-Residents”.
As e-Residents, Estonian citizens and businesses are provided with digital business authentication. It is also one of the first countries to employ the use of a blockchain-based e-voting service that enabled people to become shareholders of NASDAQ’s Tallinn Stock Exchange.
This fascinating and highly innovative country is now host to a number of Bitcoin ATMs and startups, like Paxful. They are cryptocurrency friendly, and cryptocurrency user friendly as well. Estonia also has highest internet penetration rates in the world.
Estonia may be a fine place to consider basing your ICO due to the friendly legal and regulatory environment.
This and a lot more you can learn on our website: www.ubai.co! “ “Country-by-Country Cryptocurrency Adoption
The United States of America
The USA is the world’s dominant superpower, and it should come as no surprise that it has the highest number of cryptocurrency users in the world. It also has the highest bitcoin trading volume and the highest number of bitcoin ATMs.
Powered by Silicon Valley, which is home to a lot of cryptocurrency and blockchain startups, the US stands at the forefront of all things relating to cryptocurrency worldwide. Many other nations are planning to follow the US lead concerning cryptocurrency regulations. This means the USA will serve as the testing ground for cryptocurrency and crypto-regulation in the years to come. This is likely where the future regulatory framework will take shape.
Bitcoin in particular has shown massive growth in the US. This can only be interpreted as a strong tailwind for a positive regulatory environment because the population at large supports blockchain technology.
For the moment, due to regulatory paralysis and the resultant legal vacuum, ICOs are strongly advised against raising funds or basing operations in the US. The SEC has been particularly strict in its enforcement of securities and investment law which require an ICO to do an oppressive amount of compliance work. “ “Country-by-Country Cryptocurrency Adoption
Denmark
When it comes to technological advancements and the standard of living of its citizens, Denmark is among the world leaders. It is considered one of the most developed countries in the world. It is also at the forefront of countries looking to reduce the use of cash money and advance to the use of 100% digital currency. As such, sentiment among the general public and political sphere actively supports the adoption of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment. The only question left is which particular cryptocurrency system to adopt. It is still unclear whether bitcoin is the one, or BTC will mainly just be accepted as a means of exchange. There are also discussions in Denmark about when to redesign its national financial system; this would be a “world first”, and a radical leap forward for cryptocurrencies.
Another fascinating thing is that the Danish Central Bank has declared BTC as a non-currency; meaning its use is not subject to the country’s currency regulations. Some of the top bitcoin startups and exchanges such as CCDEK have their foundations in Denmark.
With its open market and encouraging regulatory framework, Denmark might very well rival Switzerland in Western Europe for the position of the continent’s preeminent ICO and blockchain industry hub. “ “Country-by-Country Cryptocurrency Adoption
Sweden
Sweden is quite similar to Denmark, for its social and demographic climate, and also for the government’s desire to eliminate cash. The Swedish Riksbank recently introduced negative interest rates. This can cause a spike in the demand for coins in the near future as citizens look for the best way to preserve their wealth. Negative interest rates like we have seen in Europe and Japan also, actively corrode savers’ wealth because people are actually paying a percentage of their savings to the central bank to hold their cash, in addition to losing out to inflation at the same time.
Sweden has taken the boldest step yet in all of continental Europe to legalize cryptocurrency. The country legalized the use of BTC and other cryptocurrencies as a means of payment by official public declaration. It is however expected that exchanges should file for a license in accordance with AML/CTF and KYC regulations.
Sweden is also home to a number of cryptocurrency startups such as the Safello Bitcoin exchange, and Stockholm-based KnCMiner. The gradually increasing trading volume of cryptocurrency has been a good indicator of the country’s appreciating demand for cryptocurrencies. “ “Country-by-Country Cryptocurrency Adoption
The Netherlands
The Netherlands is quite fascinating in its own right. How can a country not be referred to as Bitcoin-friendly when it can boast about having its own “Bitcoin City”? There are over 100 merchants that sell goods that can be purchased with cryptocurrency in Bitcoin City.
There are no regulations restricting the use of BTC in the Netherlands under the Act on Financial Supervision of the Netherlands. This explains why a lot of startups, BTC ATMs, and even a Bitcoin Embassy can be found in the heart of Amsterdam (the capital of Netherlands).
The friendly climate for cryptocurrency has led to a lot of very active bitcoin communities across the nation hosting regular meetups and other events. The country’s banking sector has been looking to incorporate BTC and blockchain to reduce costs and improve banking technology. The Netherlands is also a popular location for many important bitcoin conferences and bitcoin companies such as BitPay.
The Netherlands is increasingly becoming a prominent place for ICOs and blockchain related businesses to base their operations. “ “Country-by-Country Cryptocurrency Adoption
Finland
Well-known as the home of Nokia, Finland has constantly been at the forefront of technological innovation, just like its other Scandinavian neighbors. The Finnish Central Board of Taxes (CBT) has even gone as far as classifying bitcoin as a financial service, exempting it and cryptocurrency purchases from the VAT. What more could be better for Bitcoin?
Finland also boasts a significant number of BTC ATMs despite its small population. The capital of Helsinki alone is reported to have 10 ATMs for BTC. The country is also home to top exchanges such as FinCCX and Bittiraha.fi. As of January 2016, the most expensive bitcoin sale took place in Finland. It involved the sale of a Tesla Model S worth over €140,000 at Auto-Outlet Helsinki Oy.
Canada
Canada is home to a variety of bitcoin startups and ATMs. It is considered to be more favorable toward cryptocurrencies than the USA. The country has two cities on its eastern and western coasts, Toronto and Vancouver, that are recognized as “Bitcoin hubs”.
Canada has a vibrant cryptocurrency community and is home to startups such as Decentral, the Vanbex Group and a large number of merchants who accept cryptocurrencies as payment. Vancouver is known to have over 20 ATMs while Toronto is well-known for holding large cryptocurrency conferences.
There has been constant growth in cryptocurrency trading volume in the country. Canada might be the best location in North America to base an ICO or operate a blockchain business due to its supportive regulatory environment and a rich ecosystem for cryptocurrency, with human talent, ATMs and other tools, etc. “ “Country-by-Country Cryptocurrency Adoption
United Kingdom
The UK is one of the absolute top financial hubs in the world. It is also a center of innovation. There are a large number of bitcoin and blockchain related startups, BTMs and active communities. All of the previously listed crypto-friendly features make the UK a very desirable environment for bitcoin. The UK has identified the inevitable need for a new payment solution and is gradually bracing itself for a widespread adoption of cryptocurrency in the future. There are even a few local pubs that accept BTC as a means of payment.
It is also interesting to note that the Bank of England has been closely monitoring bitcoin technology and has requested ideas from citizens on the improvement of its monetary system. Bitcoin is presently seen as “private money” where VAT is imposed from suppliers of goods and services that accept cryptocurrency as payment. Profits and losses incurred from cryptocurrency trading are also subject to capital gains tax, just as in the US.
In the UK, it has become increasingly clear that BTC can be part of a bigger story, and the trading volume indicates steady growth. There are not clear laws against cryptocurrencies at the present time. But the lack of regulatory momentum suggests we may see more positive developments soon. One thing to keep in mind, while the Brexit is still in progress, the British government may be more likely to legislate on non-core issues. “ “Country-by-Country Cryptocurrency Adoption
Australia
The major banks in Australia have been quite hostile toward bitcoin, but at least the country has removed the burden of “double taxation” on cryptocurrency. This was good news to the local business community because blockchain startups had begun to leave the country as a direct result of unfavorable taxation and closure of bank accounts.
The use of BTC still remains unregulated, there is no law or regulation restricting the use of cryptocurrencies by Australian citizens. Cryptocurrencies are regarded as a form of property in Australia, and purchases with BTC, for example, are referred to as “barter”.
The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), you will remember, is transitioning its CHESS verification system to a blockchain solution that should go live at the beginning of 2019. Cryptocurrencies in Australia are seen a lot like they are in the US. Topics like the imposition of capital gains tax, concern about securities law, the legal debate about using cryptocurrency as payment for goods and services, etc., are all problematic for regulators. While the general population is quite comfortable and supportive of cryptocurrencies and blockchain solutions, at the present it is not a high priority for the government to legislate or regulate. “ “Taxation and Cryptocurrency
Tax is of course one of the most important factors in financial matters on both a personal and corporate level. Taxes greatly influence investment decisions and returns, regardless of industry or size. It is one of the first things every individual or group considers before investing. Notably, in Australia and the USA, cryptocurrency gains are treated as capital gains and taxed at up to 50% of the return.
Some countries have low cryptocurrency taxes specifically to encourage the blockchain industry. By offering a more competitive tax rate, countries are implicitly supporting cryptocurrency and actively trying to offer a better return profile than other countries. We will discuss the different taxation regimes in a wide range of countries so you can ascertain the financial advantages and disadvantages of a variety of locations.
Belarus
Belarus charges 0% in taxation until 2023. That exemption is specifically for cryptocurrency exchanges and transactions. This has been done to help Belarus build a special economic zone, referred to as ‘HTP Belarus’. Their goal is to have an economic zone strong enough to compete with the likes of Silicon Valley.
The government of Belarus has also declared smart contracts as legal documents. Anyone looking to set up a blockchain company or a cryptocurrency startup should seriously consider Belarus. It has a supportive regulatory and legal environment which actively encourages the blockchain industry and does not impose punitive taxes upon those inside the industry.
“ “Taxation and Cryptocurrency
Portugal
Any and all personal income received from cryptocurrency transactions is tax-free in Portugal at the present moment. Income from cryptocurrency trading is categorized as something legally different from traditional income or capital gains.
The Portuguese government stated clearly that any kind of sale of cryptocurrency does not fall under capital income or capital gain. If an individual is however found to be carrying out professional activity, or any business activity related to cryptocurrencies, that is a different matter and such income will be subject to taxation.
From a personal perspective, Portugal is one of the leading countries where an individual can carry out their cryptocurrency transactions and enjoy a decent standard of living in the same country too. However, for ICO and Blockchain businesses it is not recommended to base your operations in Portugal.
China
China is famous the world over for being home to some of the largest cryptocurrency mines and many active cryptocurrency investors; yet at the same time China makes it illegal to conduct any cryptocurrency related business or investment.
But China still has an especially attractive environment for investors. Hong Kong runs on a policy of zero VAT or capital gains tax so it is easy to recommend you base your business there. Hong Kong also stands out as a major financial hub in the heart of Asia. “ “Taxation and Cryptocurrency
Netherlands
Actually, Netherlands was the first country to make use of a non-zero tax rate policy for cryptocurrencies. So, it may seem reasonable to expect a discouraging tax situation. But the fact is, Netherland’s tax policy is rather advantageous for cryptocurrency. They have a very simple, low-tax regime.
Cryptocurrency assets need to be declared with the total assets owned by an individual at the beginning of the year to assess their value. Cryptocurrency gains will be taxed at the highest tax bracket for capital income of just around 5%. The Netherlands is strongly recommended as a good country to work and live in, from both a personal and corporate perspective.
Germany
Germany is the economic center of the EU. This makes it a great place to start a cryptocurrency or blockchain company. Financial technology has been thriving there for more than ten years, and Germany has favorable cryptocurrency laws too.
Bitcoin and cryptocurrency assets have a 0% tax when used in making payments due to no VAT levied for making payments with BTC, because there is no “value added” through cryptocurrency as a fiscal product.
Germany offers a moderately compelling case for both blockchain business and individuals. While the tax rate on income at the company level is not competitive, the ability to pay for services in crypto as well as hold cryptocurrency assets and sell them at zero percent taxation rate is compelling. “ “Where to Base Your ICO
Let’s talk about the countries that are most accommodating with regard ICOs. Start-up ICO companies, like any company, essentially require three key principles for operation. The first is a sound legal and regulatory framework wherein the rule of law is preserved and business encouraged. The second is the ability to hire or acquire talented individuals to work at the firm. The third and final is the tax system and access to associated financial systems in order to allow the enterprise to succeed.
Estonia
This country is, perhaps surprisingly, widely referred to as the most digital society in the world. Estonians are known to be pathfinders deeply involved in setting up an efficient, secure, and transparent internet ecosystem.
The country ranks first when it comes to the number of ICOs per inhabitant. It has an incredibly supportive tax regime, actually among the most competitive in the world, as well as a deep pool of talent across all areas of the digital spectrum. Estonia offers possibly the most supportive and friendly regulatory and legal framework in the world for an ICO. This, in combination with a zero percent tax rate at both a personal and corporate level, combine to make Estonia one of the single most appealing locations from which you can launch and operate your ICO. “ “Where to Base Your ICO
Singapore
Singapore is another important regional hub in Asia for its strong rule of law as well as low taxation. The country offers one of the highest standards of living in the world. It is centrally located in the heart of Asia, so it easy to travel and recruit talent from surrounding countries. At the present there are not any specific regulations targeting the blockchain industry, but it is one of the world’s largest countries by funds raised for ICOs. It has a competitive tax regime in combination with strict AML and KYC. All of these factors make Singapore Asia’s leading location to launch and base an ICO.
The regulatory situation around the world may seem rather complicated. That is because it is. Laws and regulations are changing rapidly all over the world. And the regulatory framework is the most significant point of concern for a startup ICO. You should carefully study not only the current regulations surrounding your particular venture and how its tokenomics affects its classification, but you also need a reasonable sense of where the country is likely to be six months or a year later. Ideally you would base your ICO in a country that is supportive now, and all timeframes into the future with a competitive and legally sound tax system.
Where to Base Your ICO
Slovenia
Slovenia has recently transformed itself into the leading destination for blockchain technology in Europe. The government of Slovenia has placed a strong emphasis on the study of blockchain technology in public administration, and there has been an amazing success rate for ICOs in Slovenia. While the Slovenian government is a leader in terms of adopting cryptocurrencies, its rate of taxation is still considered quite high at 19%, even though that is still lower than other European countries. ICOs are considered to be normal business activities where you are taxed based on the funds received from an ICO less the expenses of doing business.
Switzerland
Switzerland is trying to remain relevant for the blockchain industry and for ICOs. The Swiss finance ministry is actively trying to attract investors to the country. Switzerland is considered a very important crypto location due to fact it was home to four of the largest ICOs in the world. The country is also very attractive to investors because of its friendly regulations and digital expertise. The taxation and regulatory environment is extremely secure and positive towards the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry in general.

The next wave of disruption is coming... and it's going to be beautiful

As the twitter wars heat up between the usual suspects who have claimed a stake in this technology one can't help but marvel at the beauty of it all; as the transparency of these online mediums slowly but surely lay bare for all to see the motivations and Machiavellian impulses of certain nefarious actors in this space... it is clear that, in years to come, their public record will be judged posthumously by a crowd of future historians, and some will hang their head in shame for the part they played in trying to (mis)shape bitcoin's future.
Many of us feel history repeating itself; having been here in the early days of the internet and seeing Microsoft and big business swoop on what was once a beautiful decentralised playground for tinkerers and thinkers who believed in a borderless world free of power and control, only to see those ideals snatched away by an old world that saw the internet as nothing but another technology to be exploited for monetary gain.
I have been to countless bitcoin conferences and quietly sat on the sidelines; offering my humble insights, expertise and guidance where needed, cautious of succumbing to the glare of the spotlight; of being another talking head on a stage who thinks he knows the future.
And I have watched quietly to see this space evolve from a handful of misfits and rebels to a vast sprawling network that spans every profession and all social strata; I watched people take this technology as a battering ram against the 'old world', laughing with porcine glee at the money they've made along the way.
And finally, I watched the VC's come and the coke-fueled after parties and, with it, the hedonism and greed as good people got carried away by it all... Some of those people laughing "it's all about the Benjamins!!!", "CEO's" of companies in this space you know all too well... It's enlightening, to watch their true colours and real motivations come out after a few beers and lines of sniff... To see how quickly they abandoned more principled and ethical founders for faster, shinier rewards.
I have watched these bitcoin companies form - not around the transformative potential of this technology or its ability to serve the public good - but around the same profit incentives and greed that called for bitcoin's invention in the first place. Companies that had no "WHY?" capable of helping move humanity forward, with nothing creative or imaginative under the hood...
It left a bad taste and at times, I would wonder whether perhaps I'm too old, or I expect too much of people, or that perhaps I take bitcoin's potential to help us progress to a Type I Civilisation too seriously.
But then I would watch as the quiet ones who see what I see would shuffle through the side-doors and simply get back to working diligently behind the scenes...
And so it had to be this way in the end...
The silly twitter wars and silly companies with false idols missing the point of all this will continue... as sure as the hedonistic dotcom frenzy that missed the transformative capacity of the internet did its thing... The difference this time around is we see all of this is playing out at a far faster rate than the internet fight did, simply because we can now communicate ideas to a far greater magnitude of people near instantaneously.
As such, networks of good people here for the right reasons will continue to grow in strength and number and the innovation, camaraderie, goodwill and sheer genius of this community will continue unabated.
Lightning network is here, Blockstack is here... and with those technologies comes yet another tsunami of disruptive innovation in this space... The average VC, the average consumer and, indeed, many bitcoin incumbents can't yet see where all this leads. To see that far, requires the same cognitive leap that we asked financial incumbents to take back when all this started... And yes, it means to once again learn new skills and tools and go back to the drawing board as we begin to understand the ramifications of yet another possible future.
And that future is clear for all those who dare to see beyond the here and now... As for those old bitcoin companies with their heads in the sand (companies that have done little more than replicate the old world 'middlemen' business models bitcoin was invented to circumvent) they will either have to adapt to this new adjacent possible or face the very same disruption they themselves brought upon old incumbents.
This is of course a realisation that's difficult to embrace if the bitcoin empire you built by 'taking a cut' didn't see this coming, especially when you have made fiscal promises to VC's that need to be paid back. The default mode for those but the bravest when faced with this wall of cognitive dissonance, is to go into fight or flight.
Ironic that the "and then they fight you stage" now extends to these newly minted bitcoin emperors with no clothes, who just a few years ago enjoyed so gleefully the schadenfreude of bringing the exact same level of disruption down upon the old world.
Luckily for them, those who represent what bitcoin truly stands for, are a forgiving and compassionate lot <3

Why doesn't Bitcoin have ads?

Would be great to see ads on mainstream media platforms. Ads on Youtube and Facebook for example would probably help shaping Bitcoin's image in a positive way. I wonder why i've never seen any. Is there no fund for such things?

[Winner’s Thread #57] Wow!! I never thought it would be me!!!

What a thrill this is!!!
I honestly was stunned (and a little overwhelmed!) when I realized I’d been picked this month.
I’m relatively ancient for a redditor, thoroughly middle aged - and a little bit of a technological luddite. Setting up accounts and sorting through all of the business end of this has been a learning experience. I don’t know how many hours I spent on that, but it was a lot!! Luckily, with a little bit of handholding from u/lilfruini I feel like I’m in pretty good shape (hope your physics went well!!). I have learned SO MUCH, and if nothing else, I’m grateful for that - I honestly had only the dimmest understanding of bitcoin and now I’ve got a bitcoin wallet! What?!?!
A bit about me… Middle aged like I said before. I’m a speech therapist, a plant lover (as has been noted already!), and I have a very rare neurodegenerative disease called Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia. It’s a progressive disease, and although nobody would wish for something like that, if you’re going to have a neurodegenerative disease, I pretty much have the very best one.
Honestly, I am pretty lucky. I’m in a profession that I love, a place that I love - all of my needs for shelter, food, safety, companionship are met… I know that I’m doing better already than so many, and I have so much to be grateful for in my life.
As to what I plan to do with donations… I had a lot of time yesterday to think about it!!!
First - I need some things for my students - I need a voice amplifier, and some new materials that I can use both in person and for distance learning. If I can find one cheap, I’d also really love to have a second monitor to make teletherapy easier to manage. I’ve already spent so much of my own money on teachers pay teachers and other sites, but there are many more materials and supplies that would help make this challenging school year a little better and easier.
Second - I have my eye on a couple plants - a rubber tree tineke and a manjula pothos… neither of them are very expensive or rare, I just haven’t felt like I had the leeway in my wallet to treat myself to those recently.
And last, but certainly not least. This week just happens to be Spastic Paraplegia Awareness Week! The Spastic Paraplegia Foundation (SPF) is the national organization dedicated to advancing research and finding cures for two groups of closely related, progressive neurological disorders (Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia and Primary Lateral Sclerosis). I have been participating in all of the studies available to me - (knowledge is power!) and although I don’t have a lot of money to donate towards research, I certainly don’t mind being a guinea pig in the hopes that someday a treatment or a cure might be found. There are clinical trials going on in Australia right now and they’re working on funding to bring trials to the US as well. If any of you are so inclined and want to learn more you can check out sp-foundation.org.
Thank you to all - and especially again to u/lilfruini who was an enormous help to me.
update
This has been a crazy 24-ish hours!!
I'm not gonna lie, seeing all the notifications about money coming into my accounts has been exciting, but what's been even more meaningful to me are all the kind words, congratulations, and well wishes from all over the world.
Pandemic, and protests, and fires, and everything else going on in the US this summer... It's worn me down... I've been feeling so very tired deep into my bones. All y'all have reminded me that it's not always this way - hope for humanity restored!! :)
My heart feels full and warm and I sincerely wish that everyone could experience this. It's amazing and even after the money is gone I will remember this feeling.
I'm not a millionaire! ;)
I haven't done the exact math, but I'm a thousandaire for sure. I hope all of you who have donated know that I genuinely appreciate it and I will be certain to put this money to good use. I've tried to keep up with thanking everyone - if I missed you it wasn't intentional (except for that one guy - he was a jerk!!)
Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me this amazing gift.

Convince me

Hi there,
Before I ask you guys some questions, I wanna tell you how I got into crypto and how I've perceived the landscape so far: Following the news about the Winkelvoss twins investing in Bitcoin in 2013, I've been looking into it. At the time, I've been contemplating to invest 10k in a mining rig from Butterfly labs, but concluded that they were scammers and moved on with my studies without having acquired any Bitcoin after all. Fast forward a few years, and I hear news about Bitcoin again and seeing how much money went into this, I realized Bitcoin was here to stay. So, after it hit 5k, I've finally decided to actually invest some of my savings. But due to bank verification issues with Coinbase, I narrowly missed the China dip in mid-September. Still, I was immediately in profit, and by the time it was October, the media was all over Bitcoin. I've tried day-trading for a bit, but ended up losing as much as 30% of my portfolio until I've discovered that trading alt coins was far more profitable, than just selling and re-buying Bitcoin with fiat currency. Within weeks, I had not only re-gained my original amount of Bitcoins, but also tripled it.
Then came the Segwit2X-FUD with the aim of replacing Bitcoin, which was more about firing the core devs, so Roger Ver and his friends could shape Bitcoin to their own liking. After they had failed, they devoted all their resources to Bitcoin Cash. Up until that point I hadn't even taken the coin seriously but seeing how much it ate away from BTC's market share got me thinking it that it might have a future at some point. However the ensuing dump to below $1'000 made it difficult for me to believe that it was more than a pump&dump coin like Bitcoin Gold and Diamond, so I've been hesitant in investing in BCH. Roger's rage quit in his recent interview didn't help to restore my confidence in the coin either. I'm sick of both Bitcoin camps fighting each other (especially on reddit), and both subs just feel like religious cults which won't accept anything other than their own opinion (Bitcoin is much worse in that regard). I'm not loyal to any coin, though I believe in the future of digital assets. Even though I've only invested with what I could spare, having to deal with all this FUD and daily swings of thousands of dollars gives me anxiety. Honestly, both camps have a good approach to scaling and I don't really care about which one ends up winning. What kills me is the back-and-forth, and having to constantly be up-to-date about what both camps are doing. I'm just longing for a piece of mind at this point.
So, on to this post's purpose: How are you guys convinced Bitcoin will become the 'real Bitcoin'. How do you imagine this would happen? Do you just expect every exchange and website to list BCH as Bitcoin without dragging their feet for years or decades? Or do you expect Bitcoin Cash to remain under the BCH ticker and be permanently referred to as Bitcoin Cash? How do you think the public will address it? Currently, the average Joe has no idea about Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Ripple, Neo, IOTA or other alt coins. And the market seems to think BCH is just another alt-coin, given that it tanks much more during BTC crashes. How are you convinced that's gonna change? Have you even thought this through?
Also, what do you have to say about Dr. Craig Wright, who's claiming to be Satoshi and seems to have a good relationship with Roger Ver and Calvin Ayre? He's a pretty smart guy, who's spent all of his life in academia, and as a scientist myself, I can appreciate that, but even Gavin Andresen thinks he can be a douche at times. He seems to have a pretty different idea on how Bitcoin should work than what it is now. According to a few interviews he's given, he wants Terrabyte blocks and believes that centralization of miners in 'hubs' was the idea all along.
I'm not sure what I should believe. Vitalin's signaling theory argument is totally plausible to me. If he is Satoshi, then why make the proof of his identity so convoluted? But watching all the interviews and presentations in which Wright appeared and looking at his posts, gives me the impression that he is a brilliant mind and that he could have played a role in the inception of Bitcoin.
Does it even matter anymore what the 'original vision' of Satoshi was? Other coins, such as Ethereum are much more useful than either Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash right now. Having 30x more developers than the next blockchain and more transactions than all other coins combined, I think it's here to stay.
I like to think of Bitcoin as being the early Apple, which was then overtaken by Microsoft. I agree that Bitcoin Cash is closer to the 'original vision' of Satoshi, but what makes you think that there aren't any better alternatives already out there now?
Convince me why you think that Bitcoin Cash will be the coin to rule them all.
If you've come this far, thanks for reading all of my concerns. Please be nice, I'd love to know what you guys think.

Getting there together: The moon is far. But not far enough.

Nothing good comes from actions taken through fear, pressure, greed or impatience. Nothing.
We’d do well to remember Andreas’ wise and portentous words a few years back:
“No government can fuck bitcoin up. Only we can fuck it up… from the inside.”
It has saddened many to see the split in team bitcoin.
I had hoped by now hands would have been shaken and unity restored, but it seems we continue to run in circles, echoing the wider circus show that is Red vs. Blue, Remain vs. Leave and all the petty one-upmanship, twisted half-truths and mudslinging that comes with waging information wars on an unwilling, subdued and confused populace.
As with our tattered partisan democracies reflecting never-ending post-factual news cycles via embittered old vitriolic patriarchs, so too it seems, our little motley crew of misfits and rebels have resorted to the very same tactics we lambast those FUDsters for. FUDsters we, as a community, are supposed to rally against.
There was a time when some bitcoiners – Roger included – feared for their lives and liberty, such was the commitment to this idea of a better world. Look how far we have come together since those dark, scary, lonesome days where we all needed to hide in the shadows… only a small crazy few in the world to cling to for morale and understanding.
How did such a small group of believers get to this bold new frontier we are on the precipice of with such ease? By working together, united as one and by simply telling the truth to the world at large.
Never did I think the day would come where petty differences would be so vast between us, they couldn't be settled like Gentlemen. And what is happening today is definitely not Gentleman.
Are we not tired of seeing ads paid for by /btc and bitcoin.com to buy points of views in the exact same way political parties try to buy our minds and worldviews through TV and social media? Are we saddened that Roger's crew feel so ostracised that those are the only way they feel they can reach the 'masses'?
Must we endure the same tactics of the vote-buying organised criminal class? Is this not the kind of us vs. them mentality this technology was supposed to help free us all from?
Equally, are we not tired of the attacks on Roger Ver who no doubt feels like an injured animal backed into a corner.
Whilst I abhor Roger’s strong-arm but very clever, almost honey badgeresque ;) tactics, it unnerves me that bigger, faster stronger business is his raison d’être. It unnerves me too that a single 'partisan' blogpost from someone who runs a mining pool in China can make a mockery of all the hard work, sweat and camaraderie we have all put into this project because there is no single unifying message of truth out there.
It's all happening too fast, and it is this exact million miles per hour coke-fuelled mentality that got that 'other' economy into the mess it's in, requiring the release valve of bitcoin.
The irony of all this of course is, had the split not created all this negativity and driven a wedge of fight or flight through the community, we may have all arrived at a compromise months ago that lead to bigger blocks - through consensus. Or, the alternative solutions may well have been advanced by everyone on the same page.
Either way, consensus is a must, unless you want us to repeat the same mistakes of that old world we've been rallying against. And yes, it takes time to get widespread agreement. Even more so when there's FUD flying in every corner.
In the very least, had we not been infighting we could have properly devoted time and energy to developing a robust consensus platform that even the layman can get involved with. After all, do we not one day hope to build these kind of systems for decentralised crowd-driven governance? Why not start with our own governance platform? Instead of splintering us into factions, could Roger not have vested his time and ample resources in helping develop a framework for such a platform? Would this not address the actual key issue here: too much noise and lack of real communication.
What really leaves a bad taste in my mouth is to see all the ad-hominem personal attacks levelled at Roger.
Roger Ver is a man that has been monumental in spreading the word of bitcoin, cares deeply about the innocent victims of the ‘shock and awe’ doctrine and has solid empathy towards the struggles faced by fellow humans. And he's made us smile a good few times along the way too...
Who can forget the ‘Bitcoin: Honey Badger of Money’ billboard that he had erected back in 2011 and (afaik) still stands to this day? How many people have driven past that and found bitcoin because of Roger? How many ripples in the ocean of awareness did Roger first cast?
Roger’s ‘how bitcoin stops war’ speech (and subsequent Tomasz animation) bought a lump to my throat, as did the very real heartfelt tears Roger shed for Iraq war victims; his softly spoken manner tells us that his heart is in the right place and that he loves bitcoin and its potential to free humanity from the yoke of middlemen as much as we all do.
But bitcoin is not going to end war in isolation – it can’t even end the war we created within our own ranks!
Both camps should be ashamed that we’ve allowed things to get this far. Jesus, we’ve surmounted so many obstacles together, and from real, actual ‘bad guys’ who do not give one nano fuck about this world or the people in it. Remember the money 2020 bankster comments all those years back? “Look at these fuckin’ nerds talking about bitcoin. They’ve never seen true evil till we fuck them in the ass”. THAT’S what we were up against. The following year, bitcoin brochures were on every seat at that very same conference. THAT’S what we surmounted... TOGETHER.
The attacks on Roger need to stop, as do his attacks on this subreddit, and its mods. Yes censorship sucks, but so does DDOSing a community that doesn’t understand the intricacies of the argument; an argument that should be settled either via building the aforementioned consensus platform or, for now, via Google hangouts, IRC and a separate subreddit where it can all be weighed up without the intervention and bias of people who are going to railroad the discussion through ignorance and/or belligerence, or simply people who aren't interested in technical discussions. bitcoin isn't the place for it, just as we decided it wasn't the place for market and price discussions.
Roger needs to feel he can come back to this subreddit. He was and should again be an important part of the team here as soon as these bumps in the road have been ironed out. And they will be ironed out, because we're all really fucking good at solving big problems, which is what bought us together in the first place. And this is a tiny problem compared to the others we've solved. A problem we ALL want to solve.
“But… but roger said this…” I hear bitcoin clamouring in the comments. We should not give a single fuck what Roger did or didn’t say since the Roger we are seeing is not the Roger that erected that billboard or shed those tears or made that speech, and that’s because he has faced so much vitriol from a community that has forgotten (or newbs that don’t know) all the crazy risks he has taken in the past to spread bitcoin awareness and back believers. And yes, his own actions have at times been questionable, but they come as a direct result of feeling voiceless and powerless. He’s not saint bitcoin jesus (none of us are) but he is, on the whole, good for bitcoin and passionately wants to help humanity move forward.
So let's help Roger and everyone else get back to expending our energy and considerable skills in the most positive ways for the entire group.
Which brings me to core itself, and the importance of consensus. On any programming job of this scale and sensitivity: consensus is fucking paramount. End of. If we're having problems reaching consensus it's because of a lack of communication, not a problem with the processes required to move forward. Without those processes this project would have crashed and burned years ago, probably around the time GOX went up in flames.
On this subject, I attended a core roundtable meet a few years ago in London. Present were Gavin, Peter and Mike Hearn (back before he jumped ship). Mike came across as massively frustrated, and rather than trying to build bridges, instead took the authoritarian "do it my way or I’ll burn them down" approach whilst wonderfully gentle Gavin meekly stood underneath, unsure which lane to stand under.
Peter was the only one who truly impressed me and left me feeling (as a fellow programmer) that core was in safe hands whilst he guided the oncoming traffic. He fulfilled the role of a strong leader but more importantly maintained an air of the calm, resolute thinker and rational listener. As frustrating as this might be for those like Roger who are deeply passionate about business working alongside this technology: calm, dispassionate logic is what’s needed to drive the code; if we don’t want that code falling off a manmade cliff. Yes it sucks if you're used to running a fast-paced business and you feel the out of date shop fittings are bad for customers, but having working lights and an actual USP is far more superior to pushing on with new renovations only to have the roof cave in on you and your customers.
The recent implosion of R3CEV has vindicated my thoughts on all this. In an ideal world, Mike, another person who has been fundamental in helping shape bitcoin for the better, would come back to the fold and accept that bitcoin is not and cannot be run like a business and, as such, nothing can happen through force of his will alone, no matter how loud he shouts or how many spanners he throws into the works. Indeed, had he not wasted time on lighthouse or writing guff demonising bitcoin, and instead used his skills on streamlining consensus with actual TECH instead of arrogance, maybe he would have solved the very boring human relational problems facing us. Quite why Mike figured the solution was a sassy essay and an entire new blockchain backed by the same system (and people) bitcoin is supposed to circumvent is beyond me. It makes absolutely no sense unless he never really believed from the beginning.
Then again, maybe the whole ‘bitcoin is dead' thing was an elaborate hoax, and Mike’s job was simply to infiltrate and keep the banks busy whilst firing a rocket up cores arse (which I think it probably did)… If so, bravo Mike; we look forward to seeing you appear as a nominee alongside Craig Wright at the 2020 bitcoin tinfoil oscar ceremonies ;)
So here we are. (TL/DR)
Bitcoin is still here and will still be here tomorrow, as sure as the sun will set and the moon will rise.
But wouldn’t it be a lot nicer if the whole family were dancing in the moonlight?
We MUST remember as the unlikely bunch of human beings from all walks of life that found and believed in this grand idea born in digital cyberspace all those years ago, that we all have FAR more similarities than we do differences. And the real strength we have is not that we believe in bitcoin but that we believe in EACH OTHER.
We MUST strive to put our differences to one side and start working together again otherwise we are no better than those shock and awe men in corridors of power we - or people who think very much like us - will surely one day peacefully take the baton of power from to lead them and the rest of humanity out of the darkness.
To do that we must lead by example. Together.
To do so means both camps dropping egos; and appealing to logical, rational process over impulsive fear-driven emotions. It means to tread slowly and carefully and to forgive each other for caring so much we hurt each other and the whole community in the process.
But most of all it means observing the obvious truth we have witnessed from the beginning:
The “crazy one’s” that comprise team bitcoin are stronger, braver and crazier together :)
We’ve come far together.
We will go even further when we stay together.

SQ

I like Square as a company and see a lot of people are bullish about it. However, a few things stop me from investing. Be interested to hear thoughts but at the moment I am a Square bear.
Management
Jack Dorsey is a visionary. I don’t think this is controversial. However, his track record at Twitter is worrying for shareholders. Be it daily active user growth, ambition with acquisitions but ultimately failure to monetise a fantastic platform where you have big corporations, celebrities and even the President reaching out to 200m daily active users for free. With Square, the closed loop business model of businesses and consumers is again a fantastic concept that could break the power of Visa/Mastercard. Execution remains to be seen, of course.
Competition
Square operate in a highly competitive field for consumers and businesses. Let’s take consumers based on Square’s fast-growing Cash App. It offers things a normal bank does like deposits, ATM access, money transfer. If it becomes a fully-fledged bank offering loans, credit; it is competing against the likes of big incumbents (e.g. JP Morgan, Bank of America). Granted they’re dinosaur firms but they already have a huge customer base that are older and, therefore, have more money and deposits. This means it is much easier for them to monetise their customers resulting in high ARPU. Why would these lucrative customers, en-masse, want to uproot their finances to Square when their existing providers will be providing the same service by copying Square, as JP Morgan have done this week? Link
For businesses, Square’s provides software offering (invoicing, PoS, online store) but face strong competition from the likes of Shopify who are taking a fully integrated service approach to SMEs which allows them to take their business online but also manage all their backend processes, including payments. This is a highly convenient service for entrepreneurs. Shopify already has 6% share of the online retail market. Square also provides hardware products which make it easy for SMEs, in particular, to take payments. However, there is evidence that retail is facing a more permanent shift in the US vs. the rest of the world with 60% less footfall today than a year ago Link. 58% of Square’s GPV is from food/drink, retail and professional services. Square may have good market share but it is a shrinking industry.
And as a final piece, competitors in both spaces are generally in very healthy financial shape: Paypal, Shopify, Global Payments, Western Union and big banks are well-capitalised.
Valuation
Perhaps you can get over the above with the fact that Square has strong network effects and are able to win customers cheaply. However, in my opinion, Square is priced for perfection. Simply looking at a price/sales metric, it is trading 13x LTM. This is high but maybe relatively reasonable for a fast-growing business. However, 25% of Square’s revenue is accounted by Bitcoin “revenue”. This brings little value to Square (2% gross profit) and even Square themselves discount this revenue in their KPIs because it is “out of their control and not reflective of Square’s performance”.
Now onto profits. It is not fair to be too hard on Square’s profitability. After all, it is in high growth phase and its marketing costs were its highest opex line item at roughly 35% for YTD. However, a cursory look at it is Enterprise Value / EBITDA (forward look to Dec2020), it is 242x. If we give credit for Square’s business plan for a further two years, today’s Enterprise Value over broker consensus forecast EBITDA for 2022, it is still a heady 77x. This is when Square is supposed to have EBITDA of $1bn which is three times more than it is forecast for Dec 2020. Priced to perfection.
If you compare it to Paypal, it is trading at 39x and 27x EV / EBITDA for Dec 2020 and 2022.
Conclusion
Square has formidable backers like Ark Invest. I am also not a great believer in “dumb retail” overvaluing a stock for a prolonged period of time. But for reasons above, I am cautious with Square and yet it keeps climbing so please tell me what I am missing…

Bitcoin Will Shape Twitter’s Future, Jack Dorsey Says

Bitcoin is gaining more and more popularity and the adoption of digital assets is also going great despite the global crisis in the middle of which we are.
The mainstream adoption of cryptos has been a massive goal that the crypto industry has set and there have been a lot of moves made in this direction so far.
Now, it’s been revealed that the future of social media platform Twitter will be shaped by Bitcoin and its underlying technology, the blockchain, according to chief executive Jack Dorsey.
Business Insider reported that Dorsey was once again endorsing a decentralized social media standard at a virtual conference that took place on September 25.
Bitcoin and the blockchain to shape the future of Twitter
“A lot of our value in the past was around content hosting. So we would host the tweets, the images, and videos,” Dorsey stated during the conference.
He continued and said: “Blockchain and bitcoin point to a future, and point to a world, where content exists forever, where it’s permanent, where it doesn’t go away, where it exists forever on every single node that’s connected to it,” the billionaire told Human Rights Foundation president, Thor Halvorssen.
According to the same online publication mentioned above, Dorsey’s revolutionary conceptualization of open, decentralized social media has the following important goal: to transform the company’s relevance as a “content hosting” platform.
“Right now we’re in the phase of finding a leader for it, but this is a completely separate non-profit from the company,” he said.
He continued and explained, as cited by the online publication mentioned above that “This group will be tasked with building a protocol that we can use and everyone else can use.”
We recommend that you check out the complete article in order to learn more details.
Regarding the price of Bitcoin today, at the moment of writing this article, the king coin is trading in the green and it’s priced at $10,722.08.
